How It Works

Our Step-by-Step Process

Color Selection

We show you stain swatches and apply 2–3 test patches on your floor. You choose the color you love.

Sanding to Bare Wood

Full sand removes all old finish and levels the surface. Even staining requires clean, bare wood.

Stain Application

Stain is applied by brush and wiped by hand for an even, natural look. One coat is typical; darker colors may require two.

Dry Time

Stain dries fully before any top coat — rushing this step causes adhesion problems and uneven color.

Finish Coats

2–3 coats of Bona Traffic HD applied with light screening between coats for maximum adhesion and durability.

Final Walkthrough

We walk through the result with you and provide care instructions before leaving.

Materials & Products

What We Use on Every Project

We work with stains from Duraseal, Bona, and Minwax — spanning dozens of colors from pale natural tones to deep espressos, grays, and custom blends. On oak, popular colors include:

  • Natural / Unfinished (no stain)
  • Early American (warm medium brown)
  • Classic Gray / Smoke (trendy cool tone)
  • Dark Walnut (rich brown)
  • Ebony (near-black)
  • White / Whitewash (bleached, Scandinavian look)

Custom blends are possible — we mix colors on-site to achieve exactly what you're envisioning.

Common Problems We Fix

Floor Issues We Solve

🎨

Color That Doesn't Match Your Decor

We restamp or refinish to a new color that works with your furniture, walls, and lighting.

☀️

Faded or Yellowed Floor Color

Sanding removes the faded layer; fresh stain and finish restore the color and depth.

🔲

Mismatched Room-to-Room Colors

When rooms were finished at different times, colors drift. We match or unify them during refinishing.

🪵

New Boards That Need to Match

After board replacement, new wood is stained to blend with the existing floor color.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — we carry dozens of standard colors and can blend custom shades on-site. We always apply test patches on your floor before proceeding so you approve the exact color.
Going lighter always requires sanding to bare wood, which we do as part of every refinishing job. Going lighter is possible but the result depends on the wood species — some woods (like oak) lighten beautifully; others don't.
Bring in a cabinet door, fabric swatch, or paint chip from your room. We'll match stain swatches to it and apply test patches on your actual floor so you see exactly how it will look in your lighting.
Yes, staining adds roughly $0.50–$1.50 per square foot to the refinishing cost depending on the color and number of coats needed.
The stain itself doesn't wear — the finish coat wears. With a quality waterborne finish like Bona Traffic HD, you can expect 10–15 years of wear in a residential setting before refinishing is needed.
